If your new puppy is coming home soon you may be looking for a couple of things to prepare. We have compiled a checklist of things to think about having on hand, as well as our suggestions for products. We may receive compensation for certain products.

Food and Treats

Soft training treats… soft treats are chosen for positive reinforcement and to ease the transition of moving. They are also easy to chew for their growing teeth.

Meat Treats... We like to give treats made without fillers as often as possible. It is hard to find soft treats made with only meat, but when they get a little older we like to give single-ingredient treats.

Food and Water Bowls…There are a lot of cute options for food and water bowls. We like using stainless steel since it is hard to break or chew.

Pumpkin Puree… If you are traveling to bring your puppy home, they may get some loose stool. Pumpkin puree is a natural simple way to help firm it up. Even for adult dogs, we keep pumpkin puree on hand.

Treat Pouch… Sometimes you need your hands while training and this pouch makes it easy to have treats on hand to reward good behavior whenever you see it.

Food Storage... We like having our food in an air-tight container, that keeps bugs and dogs out and the smell and fresh food in.

Creating the Perfect Puppy Spot

Pee Pads… Even if you aren’t planning to train your puppy on pee pads, it is always good to have them on hand. You never know when you are going to be on the road and need it in a pinch.

Soft Bed… A plush soft bed is crucial for creating a cozy puppy spot.

Small/Medium Crate… If you plan to crate-train, we recommend a wire crate that can be easily cleaned. It is helpful to train in a crate that isn’t too much bigger than they are. When dog grows to an adult size you will want a large or extra-large crate. Until then we recommend a small or medium crate. Some crates like this one include a divider so the crate will grow with the puppy.

Potty Training Spray… Not quite a necessity but it can be super helpful especially if you are planning to teach your puppy to be potty trained on a pee pad first.

Play Pen... Depending on the setup of your household this could be helpful in defining your puppy's space.

Adult Bed… Since goldens have such long hair they easily overheat. Our dogs prefer this raised cooling bed over a plush bed.

Outside Fun

Door Bells... We use bells on our doors to help train the puppies to go outside. We also use it on the doggy door the puppies go through, to reinforce that idea. This is one of the many great ways to aid potty training.

Leash… Having a leash that has an additional loop at a heel length makes it easier for us to remember to keep their leash at a close length while training.

Collar… We like the strong metal clip that the K9 Explorer brand offers.

Poop Bags…  The reality of living with dogs…

Pooper Scooper… While we are on the subject, this is another helpful tool that saves your back, and nose. We recommend a tall sturdy wide one.

Toys and Enrichment

Plush dog toys… The more the merrier. Each puppy will develop their favorite, but romping around with a bunch is fun.

Balls… Retrievers love a good game of fetch, tennis balls are always a favorite. We like how durable these are.

Kong… They are indestructible and loved by all dogs whether or not they have treats in them.

Grooming

ree

Brush… It’s no secret that Goldens shed a lot. It’s nice to have a couple different brushes on hand that target different types of hair, like one for detangling and one that targets shedding.

Bath Lick Mat... Giving the dog something in the bath helps keep them distracted from jumping on you and eases anxiety.

Puppy Shampoo… Getting a tear-free natural shampoo helps make sure the puppy is comfortable and clean.

Nail Trimmer… For puppies, a nail clipper tool is helpful for their rapidly growing nails. As they grow up a Dremel may be beneficial too.

Lint Roller... Or leave it on as glitter. The sticky lint rollers removes other debris on clothing. We also like this reusable lint roller, though it only removes hair and not other types of lint.
